Workshops

Every academic year, the Foundation organizes music workshops which gather children from both sides of the Green Line that separates Israel from Palestine. These workshops give them the opportunity to get to know each other and to spend some days together.

Thus, music becomes an important tool to develop children’s aptitudes and to establish an intercultural dialogue. Beyond the musical aspects, these workshops also offer new ways of expression and socialization among teenargers from opposite contexts, allowing them to create bridges of communication, as well as personal relationships for the future.

Three workshops are carried out during the academic year which involves the participation of approximately 120 young Palestinian musicians. This activity normally takes place during the school holidays, December-January, March-April and Summer.

The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID http://www.aecid.es/ES) financed the music workshops in Palestine during the academic year 2011-2012.

Concerts

Since 2010, the Barenboim-Said Foundation organizes a Concert Series, where internationally renowned performers of the contemporary classical music scene participate. This Concert Series was born with the objective of contributing to the development of Palestine’s cultural life and to awake the interest for music among its population.

The Concert Series started with a piano recital from Daniel Barenboim, followed by artists such as András Schiff, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Elena Baschkirova, Nabil Shehata and Emmanuel Pahud, to name a few. All of them collaborate altruistically with the Foundation, with the objective of taking classical music to different local venues. The musicians also give master classes to the Foundation’s students in the area.

This activity is complemented with concerts offered by the Barenboim-Said Music Center’s teachers in different Palestinian cities. These concerts are organized in collaboration with the Spanish Consulate General in Jerusalem.

Furthermore, the Foundation’s students participate in the ‘Young Talents’ competition, a concert series which includes the performance of several concerts in the region. These concerts represent an important practical element, which enables them to become familiar with stages and audiences, as well as to acquire professional experience.
